A wide variety of motions go into hanging laundry to dry - from picking up laundry baskets to pinching and holding blankets and clothespins. Walking myself through each step around this process helped generate problems and solutions. I really enjoyed the idea of play happening while doing laundry and decided to incorporate that sense of fun and camaraderie into my design.
The Bounce! clothespin can be produced by mass production or individual handcraft. Being able to make a version for low or no cost over time widens the design's financial accessibility as well. Below are the functional prototypes I crafted using athletic balls.
In terms of mass production, injection molding would be the best solution for a spherical shape with cutouts. In terms of handcraft, this design can be made easily by cutting into reused athletic balls.
The Bounce! Clothespin adds fun and play to the tedium of laundry with a simple squeeze of your hand. The smaller bounce pin is used for thin fabrics and the larger bounce pin is used for thick fabrics.
The spherical shape held even thick sweaters and blankets in place when the line is tugged or pulled harshly. The bounce pins were easy to remove with one squeeze. No pinching required.
